FileMaker Smartphone Applications Help Businesses Avert Economic Crunch

December 11th, 2008

Richmond VA – FMWebschool Inc., announces FileMaker Smartphone application to help businesses avert the economic crunch. More and more businesses are looking for ways to cut spending without compromising the quality of service provided. Companies are struggling to maintain their current workforce with less money in an uncertain market. Innovation becomes the keyword here as the once tried and true brick and mortar business is quickly becoming a thing of the past. The new workforce is made up of home and mobile offices. According to Penn, Schoen and Berland a strategic marketing firm, over 20 million Americans now work from home.

Mobile business applications give businesses a key advantage in this economic downturn by saving time and money. Cost savings encompass the entire spectrum of the workforce – from delivery drivers to real estate agents to physicians. By becoming mobile, companies can free up thousands of dollars spent on re-typing data collected in the field. Data can immediately be collected and then synced to the main office. Mobile devices once used for only sending emails, sending SMS messages and making phone calls, can suddenly become powerful devices to drive business applications.

The question is how? How can a device as simple as a smartphone enable an individual to be just as productive as if they were working at a desktop computer or a laptop? FMWebschool decided to focus on a global community, all sharing a common element, FileMaker Pro. FileMaker Pro is a database system with a user-base in the millions. Many companie’s entire infrastructure is based on FileMaker database solutions. FMWebschool created a tool that enables individuals to access and deploy FileMaker database solutions on the iPhone and iPod touch.

FMWebschool immediately realized that the new mobile workforce would need the tools to operate from any location and still have access to all of their important data. Individuals would need to be able to access FileMaker databases that until now were only available on their desktop computers or their laptops. FMTouch bridged the gap and allowed businesses to deploy their databases on their iPhone.

The utilization of Smartphones in the business environment is unique as it includes the ability to access database information, and make use of the features that are part of the phone. This makes Smartphones much more powerful than a laptop in many ways. For example, touch screen capabilities enable an individual to be able to perform tasks more quickly on a smartphone than a laptop.

Individuals can quickly search through a FileMaker contacts database on their phone, once the client detail record appears, they can simply touch a phone field, an email field or an SMS field and the smartphone will automatically either dial that number, send an SMS or open the email with their email address in the “to” field depending on their choice. One step further, as they are on the phone with the individual they can change their contact information in the FileMaker database and instantly save it. They could also immediately sync the data and update the information on the main server.

Still not convinced? Consider the home inspector who visits a home, with only a smartphone in hand. He accesses his home inspection database on the smartphone and then proceeds to take pictures, enter data about the house, have the record digitally signed by the home owner, create a PDF of the record with the signature and then instantly email it to the owner. The home inspector can then instantly sync the record to his main computer at the office.

His employer now has a record that has been time stamped; they know where their employee was. The data does not have to be retyped – meaning less errors, and there are photographs and a digitally signed record by the client. For the employer this also means, less chance of data being lost, and the client can be invoiced more quickly and efficiently.

The possibilities of mobile business application are endless; delivery drivers can capture digital signatures immediately for proof of delivery. Doctors can have immediate access to patient records. Realtors can have access to their clients and properties using the database to match clients to potential homes. Let’s face it, the business world runs on communication and information and mobile devices combine both.

Businesses must evolve and innovate; those that are stagnant will have the misfortune of seeing their competitors evolve and move forward even in an uncertain market. The opportunity to think outside the box and take action in new directions is now. Let FMTouch be your compass to guide you into the future. FMWebschool is currently developing FMTouch for BlackBerry and Windows Mobile.

"Welcome to Macintosh" DVD Includes DRM Free Bonus Version

December 11th, 2008

Los Angeles CA – The DVD for “Welcome to Macintosh – The documentary for the rest of us” will contain a DRM Free digital bonus version of the movie included on the disc. The DRM Free version adds to the over 3 hours of extras including; extended interviews, making of featurette, trailers, photo journal, and more. “Welcome to Macintosh” explores the history, culture and worldwide impact of Apple Inc. and the Macintosh. The fully loaded DVD is available now for $19.84.

“DRM Free content is not a new idea, but we feel we are one of the first to actually include a custom made, DRM Free “Apple device” ready version on the disc,” says Josh Rizzo, Co-director of the film.

“The file is iPod and iPhone compatible. You don’t even have to drag and Drop,” says Rob Baca, Co-director of the film. “All you have to do is double click on the file and it will copy itself into your iTunes library. No pass-codes, no downloading, no ripping.”

The announcement of the digital bonus version signifies the filmmakers’ commitment to making “Welcome to Macintosh” available to Apple and Mac fans all around the world. It has already been announced that the DVD is Region free, making it playable on nearly any computer or “region locked” DVD player in the world. The addition of the DRM Free version makes it viewable virtually anywhere.

“There is an ongoing struggle in the entertainment industry between meeting consumer expectations and protecting copyright interests of content Producers,” says Rizzo. “We find ourselves in the middle of this conflict, and we side with the consumer.”

“It takes about 30 minutes to rip a fully protected DVD, and maybe another 30 to put it on the net,” says Baca. “We realize that it will inevitably happen to “Welcome to Macintosh” so we decided to include the file for those who would prefer not to break any laws simply to enjoy their purchase on any device they own.”

“We worked hard to offer as much value to the consumer as possible.” says Baca. “With chapter marks, box art and iTunes metadata, this file is more functional than what you would ever be able to find on an illegal file sharing site.”

“We have received an overwhelming demand for the DVD and are very close to selling out of the first run,” says Rizzo. “Every step in the production chain is working hard to get it in the mail for Christmas delivery, or very soon thereafter.”

With acceptance in five international film festivals, “Welcome to Macintosh” is reaching its goal of bringing the story of Apple and the Macintosh to the new generation of iPhone and iPod users around the world. The filmmakers have some exciting public events planned for the coming months, all to be announced through their website and social network.

“Welcome to Macintosh” is the first documentary of its kind to mix history, criticism and an unapologetic revelry of all things Apple into a movie experience. The film explores the early years of Apple, the many challenges Apple has faced, and what the future may hold for the company and its products.

Ex-Apple employees, engineers and community members offer insight on the company’s innovations, failures, cultural impact and what the future may be like beyond the reign of its co-founder Steve Jobs. Interviews include notable Apple personalities Andy Hertzfeld, co-creator of the original Macintosh, Guy Kawasaki, long time Mac evangelist, Leander Kahney, author of the book “Cult of Mac”, Jim Reekes, creator of the Macintosh start-up sound and Ron Wayne, original co-founder of the Apple Computer Company.

TuneUp iTunes Plug-In Debuts for Mac OS X

December 11th, 2008

San Francisco, Calif – TuneUp, the most popular iTunes plug-in for Windows, arrives today for Apple users just in time for the holidays. Now any iTunes user can automatically fix their mislabeled song information and find missing cover art without having to leave the familiar iTunes interface. By providing correct song information and offering a complementary suite of features, TuneUp empowers users to get the most out of their music collections.

“TuneUp for Mac is a major step toward our goal of delivering the ultimate user experience for all music lovers,” says Gabriel Adiv, CEO and founder of TuneUp. “Based on the overwhelmingly positive response we’ve received from the iTunes community, we’re now working hard to expand the program to other major media players.”

The product’s foundation is a powerful cleaning function that takes an “audio fingerprint” of mislabeled tracks in a user’s library, and automatically fills in the missing information using Gracenote(R)’s Global Media Database of more than 90 million songs. No more Track_01s, Unknown Artists or Beatles vs. TheBeatles vs. Beatles,The. Since launch, TuneUp has “cleaned” over 25 million such tracks.

In addition to correcting track information, TuneUp delivers missing cover art for a user’s collection, vastly improving the iTunes/iPhone/iPod “cover flow” navigation experience. Additionally, the unique design as a “plug-in” makes all of its features possible within a sidebar that complements iTunes.

Once a user’s library has been cleaned, TuneUp provides valuable contextual content. It knowingly displays upcoming local concerts for every artist in a collection, and fetches related YouTube videos, Google news and Wikipedia bios related to any playing track. Best of all, it’s done by design, without asking users to fill out extra forms or create lists of favorite artists and albums from scratch.

Pricing and Availability:
For a limited time, a full-featured, free version of TuneUp is available with 500 “cleans” and 50 cover art “finds”. “TuneUp Gold” provides unlimited cleans and cover art and can be purchased for a one-time fee of $19.95 (USD) or for an annual subscription of $11.95 (USD). The company plans to expand support to other major media players such as Windows Media Player and AOL’s Winamp in 2009. Visit us in the Gracenote Booth at CES (#30333).

Tickets On Sale For Eighth Annual FCPUG SuperMeet

December 11th, 2008

Los Angeles, CA – Final Cut Studio users and digital filmmakers from around the world will gather together once again for the 8th Annual FCPUG “SuperMeet” to be held Wednesday, January 7, 2009 at the UCSF Mission Bay Conference Center in San Francisco, CA. Doors open at 4:30pm with an FCP tradeshow; Presentations begin at 7pm and continue until 11pm. This SuperMeet promises to be the single largest gathering of Final Cut Pro users and Gurus during Macworld Conference and Expo SF.

“We’ve been doing these SuperMeets for eight years now and it all started in San Francisco,” states Michael Horton, founder of the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro User Group (LAFCPUG) and co-producer of the SuperMeet. “We call them SuperMeets because that is exactly what they are; a “super” gathering of Final Cut Pro Users, digital video filmmakers and like-minded people who get together to learn, network and just have a good time.”

Once again this year’s SuperMeet will be held in the state of the art Robertson Auditorium inside the Mission Bay Conference Center on the UCSF campus.

“We held last year’s SuperMeet in this venue for the very first time, having outgrown every other venue we have used since we began holding SuperMeets back in 2001. Everyone loved it and the feedback was great,” states Daniel Berube, founder of the Boston Final Cut Pro User Group and SuperMeet co-producer. “It’s a beautiful facility with room to grow and this year we are using every square inch we can. In fact demand was so great from our exhibiting sponsors we were forced to buy out the Pub area to accommodate more exhibitors,” Berube notes.

“The economy might be struggling, but this year’s SuperMeet will be the largest in our history with over twenty four companies showing off their wares. That says something about this community.”

“This will be a Mini Macworld devoted entirely to Digital Video filmmakers, editors and content creators,” added Claudia Crask, head of SF Cutters, the local FCPUG. “This is the party of the year in San Francisco for those who wish to learn more about digital moviemaking with Final Cut Studio. It’s also the best place on the planet to meet fellow filmmakers who know more than you do.”

Scheduled to appear on stage, (subject to change) will be presenters from Apple, who are expected to give the latest news on Final Cut Studio 2, JVC and BlackMagic Design. Editor and filmmaker Christine Steele will show off valuable FCP tips and tricks. DVD Guru Bruce Nazarian will show how to create and burn a Blu-Ray DVD to a standard DVD-R. Independent filmmaker Eric Escobar will present “Color Correction and Getting that Right Look.” And, filmmaker Yun Suh will show clips from the documentary film “City of Borders,” scheduled for release in 2009.

Rounding out the evening will be the always raucous “World Famous Raffle” with over $40,000.00 worth of prizes to be handed out to several lucky winners. 300 “SuperBag” Goodie Bags filled with over $200.00 worth of learning resources will be handed to the first 300 people through the door. Food (snacks) and drinks will be available throughout the evening.

Tickets are now on sale and it is expected this SuperMeet will sell out. Historically every SuperMeet sells out. For complete details on the SuperMeet including driving and transit directions and instructions, a current list of raffle prizes and a link to where to buy tickets, visit the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro (lafcpug) web site.
