Televisa: World’s Largest Spanish-Language Publisher – Goes Live with K4

December 3rd, 2009

Jenkintown, PA – Managing Editor Inc. (MEI), an Adobe premier development partner and a leading provider of software solutions for the publishing industry, today announced that Editorial Televisa has begun live production with the vjoon K4 Publishing System. Editorial Televisa is the Mexico-based print branch of Grupo Televisa, the largest media conglomerate in Latin America, known throughout the world for its television production, programming and broadcasting.

MEI distribution partner Informatica Dalai SA de CV is handling K4 consulting, installation and training at Televisa. Dalai has already completed the first phase of deployment, which includes 110 users across 27 magazine titles currently producing live issues with K4 in Mexico City.

Editorial Televisa is the leading publisher of Spanish-language magazines, with titles distributed in Mexico and the United States and throughout Latin America. Its portfolio includes popular women’s publication Vanidades, entertainment title TV y Novelas and music magazine Furia Musical. Editorial Televisa also produces Spanish-language versions of renowned publications such as Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar and Men’s Health. Editorial Televisa’s magazines have a paid annual circulation of 137 million.

Televisa decided to move to K4 in late 2008 to enhance productivity and improve quality, to prepare for future development and to increase overall accountability. The company was planning a comprehensive reengineering of its publishing workflow to manage its massive catalog in a more standardized and efficient manner, and decided it was necessary to incorporate a powerful, reliable editorial system. So far, Televisa production staff has been very pleased with the smooth transition to K4:

* “We chose K4 not only because of the software itself, which, on the pilot tests, was successful, but mainly because of the experience of the integrator, Informatica Dalai, and their mastering of formal project-management methodology, excellent planning and well-defined implementation strategy.”
* “The implementation team has been working closely with the end-users, who have never been left alone. Their good planning provided enough time to assist our editorial staff in creating the magazines with K4. The team is really excellent.”
* “We did some research and on-site pilot evaluations among several publishing solutions, and what we found with K4 was that not only is the database very reliable, the system also enables workflows that help to make the work more efficient and collaborative.”
* “Without any doubt, the teamwork was the main factor, and the attitude toward the final users transmitted a good spirit to move forward. I have been involved with many projects in which every stage is a constant struggle and everyone is downhearted at the end of the project, but in this case, the result has been the opposite. I think the planning and the preparation of this project before the implementation has been really helpful.”

Since installing the system, Televisa has already seen a positive impact on its workflow management, and the publisher is already considering its future plans for K4. According to production staff, the results obtained so far have generated many ideas about development at the company, specifically regarding how Televisa can obtain even more measurable benefits thanks to the new software:

* “With the system as our cornerstone and key factor, I think in the future I can easily create job pools or any job segmentation we need, and then we will obtain a real benefit from the reengineering. Currently, we have indirect returns such as time control, but with the use of K4, we can now talk about information and we can talk about more control. We can now see more efficiencies in other areas, which are definitely a return on investment.”
* “With this platform, at this very moment, if we need to create a new title, I have the technical and standardized elements to react quickly not only on the printed side, but also to distribute content possibly through Web publishing and syndication.”
* “This implementation has been so successful that other areas within the company are willing to integrate their processes with K4. Some examples are the synchronization of a production calendar, creating a general schedule for commercialization, circulation and production, and automating the process of ad management through K4.”

Televisa is already complementing its system with K4 add-on technologies from Dalai, including Executive Vision for K4. This Web-based solution helps executives and managers closely analyze daily editorial operations. Using an optimized PrimeBase database and a custom Windows service, Executive Vision accesses and extracts sensitive production data from the K4 database server. It then generates a visual interface to track and report on specific key indicators, such as closing time by section, content produced, and detailed process follow up.

“We are proud to be working closely with Televisa’s outstanding leadership, consultants and users at this landmark project,” said Juan L. Aguirre, president and CEO of Informatica Dalai SA de CV. “We enjoyed deploying the best editorial system in the industry, paired with our own software developments, to bring workflow efficiency and flexibility, as well as facilitating editorial accountability and enabling better decision-making. Our kudos goes to all involved for their insight, trust and teamwork effort.”

K4 is helping hundreds of publishers across the globe manage their Adobe-based workflows with improved efficiency. Televisa’s purchase further expands the system’s dominance of the industry.

“Televisa is a worldwide media leader and a recognized name in several markets,” said Linda Bruce, vice president of enterprise sales at MEI. “They require a high level of quality for producing their massive editorial catalog, and we’re proud that K4 has proven itself to be the tool to accomplish that.”

yukendo 1.0 – A mathematical challenge at the palm of your hand

December 3rd, 2009

Greifswald, Germany – rapidrabbit today is pleased to announce, that their latest puzzle game is available at the Apple AppStore. “yukendo” is an addictive Sudoku variant, also known as KenKen(R). With intuitive touch controls, clear graphics and a global highscore list, yukendo takes number crunching to another level. Beginners and Sudoku masters alike can choose from a wide variety of level sizes and difficulties.

Invented by Tetsuya Miyamoto, a japanese math teacher, KenKen(R) has become popular all over the world. “yukendo” takes this formular and adopts it to the iPhone which is all about clean interfaces, intuitive controls and mobile internet. “yukendo” integrates these features into one streamlined puzzle app and sets a new standard for mathematical puzzles with large 9×9 grids that haven’t been seen on the iPhone before.

The rules are quite easy to learn, but difficult to master. As in Sudoku the grid has to be filled with numbers – 1 through 4 for a 4×4 grid, 1 through 5 for a 5×5 and so on. Every number may only occur once per row and column. Additionally the player has to solve cells, which contain a target number and a mathematical operation. “yukendo” shares many concepts with Sudoku, but adds variety to a well known gameplay.

The wide variety of level sizes and difficulty levels allow a short game on the bus or a full afternoon filled with number crunching. Whether the player wants a short distraction, a real mathematical challenge or anything in between, “yukendo” has the right puzzle. The built in highscore list motivates the player to come back over and over to see if he can make it better this time. This also allows a comparison with the best players worldwide without any tedious login or authentication process. Integration of Facebook connect offers the possibility to show the latest achievements to all friends at Facebook. No one has to play alone.

Playing “yukendo” is a fun way to train mathematic and logic skills. Every solved grid feels like a real achievement and the adaptive difficulty avoids frustration. Music and sound support the gameplay to make “yukendo” a unique experience.

“yukendo” is free and offers many hours of puzzling fun. For the advanced player there is a pro version which includes a lot of more features.

Highlights (pro version):
* Over 600 levels
* Level sizes from 3×3 to 9×9
* 3 difficulty levels for every grid
* Online highscore
* Facebook connect
* 5 music tracks to choose from
* 8 save game slots

December 3rd, 2009

Odessa, Ukraine – Today Readdle announced the release of Scanner Pro 1.2, the latest version of their popular iPhone application which transforms the device into portable scanner. Scanner Pro 1.2 introduces integration with Print n Share from EuroSmartz, the all round iPhone printing application. This integration will enable owners of the both applications to seamlessly scan and then print documents to any USB, WIFI, Bluetooth or network printer via a Mac or PC. Another highly anticipated addition of the new version is the ability to upload scanned documents to Dropbox cloud storage.

“Scanner Pro is designed to scan multipage documents and transform them into industry standard PDF files, while Print n Share enables people to print documents from their iPhones. Integration between those two applications was inevitable,” says Igor Zhadanov, Readdle CEO. “Now you can really do everything you need with your scans: send them by email, upload to web and now print!”

Prior to this type of integration iPhone developers were trying to implement all functions their users might need individually, resulting in long development cycles and highly complex applications. Co-operation between Readdle and EuroSmartz is an example of the new trend in the App Store, where established iPhone developers combine their efforts to add more functionality to their applications.

“Print n Share has become the default printing application for the iPhone and we are very pleased to be working with Readdle on this integration to enable Scanner Pro customers to print documents they have scanned onto their iPhone” says Ian Schenkel, Eurosmartz CEO. “We feel this sort of integration and co-operation will ensure iPhone users are able to achieve everything they need for their business requirements now and in the future.

How Do You Make your iPhone App Stand Out in a Sea of 100,000

December 3rd, 2009

New York, NY – Got an idea for an iPhone App? Chances are you can already find it in Apple’s iTunes App Store – and in abundance. It is a much more sophisticated iPhone world out there. Not only are there more and better apps, but there are many more experienced, genuinely creative developers and designers.

How can your App be one of the shining lights among over 100,000 Apps? The answer lies in interface design and usability. Unlike iPhone App developers, users usually have no idea what beautiful code looks like, but every user can take pleasure when presented with a truly beautiful, useful App. User interface design becomes the important differentiating factor for the most successful Apps in the App Store.

For more information on how to put a professional polish on your App, look no further than the advice and experience of iPhone developers who have released successful and popular Apps. Straight from Apress’s latest book “iPhone User Interface Design Projects,” here are seven questions top iPhone developers ask when improving their App’s interface design:

1) Have you used Apple’s UI conventions and usability testing to assure better results?

2) Did you tailor the user interface to match your target audience?

3) Have you considered enhancing the user experience through the power of the navigation bar to present large amounts of data in an exciting way?

4) Have you tried adding extra oomph through CoreLocation, Camera, and Address Book integration?

5) Have you chosen the right fonts for your programming projects to get maximum readability on the iPhone screen?

6) Did you think though all the details, even the smallest?

7) Is there a balance between simplicity and beauty in your App’s features?

About “iPhone User Interface Design Projects”
Apress’s latest book “iPhone User Interface Design Projects,” presents practical advice on user interface design from ten innovative developers who have pondered how best to make use of the iPhone’s minimal screen real estate. Their stories illustrate precisely why, with more Apps and more experienced, creative developers, no iPhone App can succeed without a great UI. With over 100,000 iPhone applications and 125,000 registered iPhone developers, is it still possible to create a top-selling app that stands apart from the six-figure crowd? Of course. But developers need more than a great idea and flawless code – eye-catching and functional user interface design is essential.
